An Forecasting Platform Participant Made $436K from Wagers on the Ouster of Maduro.
A trader profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president just before it was officially announced, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the US operation.
Sudden Shift in Forecasts
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be out of power by the end of January increased in the time leading up to former President Trump announced on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.
A particular user, which became a member last month and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $436K from a initial bet of $32,537.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement
Platform data shows that traders estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.
However the market's assessment had increased to 11% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the first hours of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in positions immediately prior to the official statement was made.
"This particular bet has all the signs of a bet based on non-public details," commented an industry expert.
Several of other platform users also profited large payouts from bets on the same outcome.
Political Attention Intensifies
Elected officials are growing concerned.
A new rule introduced on Monday seeks to ban federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.
