English Football News: Mejbri Banned for Misconduct; Guardiola Insists 'Back Line Has to Improve'
From the world of Premier League developments, a significant midfielder has been handed a significant suspension, a head coach has singled out a player's errors to prove a point, and the Manchester City manager has called for defensive improvements following a wild win.
Mejbri Issued Four-Match Ban and Fine
The Clarets' player Hannibal Mejbri was given a four-game suspension and a financial fine for misconduct in a recent match against Leeds United. The governing body said the player was referred a separate disciplinary panel following an incident where he spat towards visiting supporters at the 67-minute mark of a 2-0 win by Burnley.
A release explained: “An independent disciplinary panel has punished Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri due to his actions in the top-flight match against Leeds on 18 October. It was alleged that the player acted against the laws of football or in a poor manner and/or using offensive and unacceptable behaviour by spitting at or in the area of Leeds United supporters.”
The statement continued, “Mejbri later admitted the charge, with the Regulatory Commission handing down a four-match suspension and a fine after proceedings. The Regulatory Commission’s written reasons for the sanction will be published at a later date.” The team, currently in 19th place in the Premier League table, visit 12th-placed Newcastle this Saturday.
2. Maresca Singles Out Adarabioyo's Mistakes to Prove an Argument
The Blues' manager Enzo Maresca has stated that a lack of seasoned players is no a problem for his club, highlighting that defender Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not stop him from playing a bad game during the loss to Leeds United.
Maresca, who oversees the youngest team in the division, rejected the idea that mentality played a part in the poor result. He made his argument by singling out Tosin, Chelsea's oldest outfield player on the pitch, after he produced a mistake-riddled display at the back.
“We always mention a lack of experience after we drop points,” Maresca said. “When we beat Barcelona, the draw with Arsenal, nobody was talking about experienced players. I understand that if we lose, people are constantly searching for the reason why, but in my view the reason why we lost to Leeds is not because of inexperience, it’s because we were not at our best.”
He added, “Who was the oldest one on our team on the pitch? It was Tosin. Did he play any good? So, it’s not about experience. It's that those 11 players, they were not good enough.”
3. Guardiola Insists Defence 'Must Get Better'
The Manchester City manager has stated the champions have learnt from a recent scare against Fulham and the episode is now in the past. The team survived to claim a 5-4 victory during a remarkable clash on Tuesday, after leading 5-1 with about an hour played.
Coming after they fought off a fightback and won 3-2 in the prior fixture, it raised further doubts regarding if City are resilient required to mount a challenge to leaders Arsenal. “It’s forgotten,” Guardiola said. “Valuable lessons, I hope. At this level, for every team, one must learn from what happens in the good things and bad things and focus on what's next.”
“Of course I’m concerned,” he admitted. “We try to analyse the cause, to not concede the goals. With the three goals against Leeds, and five goals by Fulham you can see the two sides, right? So, always done plenty of positive things. Yet the number of attempts did Leeds have? Three? They scored two. That ratio is bad. How many attempts for Fulham ? Five, six? So the average of chances conceded we can see too high. We have to be better.”
Newcastle Focus New Defenders' Contracts
Newcastle United's recently appointed football chief, Ross Wilson, has made new deal negotiations with important defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his agenda for the club. Wilson joined after leaving Nottingham Forest recently and was reassured to learn playmaker Sandro Tonali has a deal that runs until 2029 with an option until 2030.
This allows Wilson free to focus on negotiations with Livramento and Botman's representatives. With the former’s agreement ending in 2027 and Botman's a year later, the club's talks have assumed a certain importance.
“My first few days in the job was when I discovered that Sandro’s contract situation was much better than the one I was expecting,” he stated. “However, it is well known that we would want to extend Tino’s contract and also wants to extend Sven Botman’s as well. Those discussions are ongoing.”
Manager Eddie Howe is missing Botman for the home game with Burnley on Saturday, with the defender expected to be sidelined for a further period.
5. Nuno Says Paquetá Will Start for West Ham
The Hammers' manager Nuno Espírito Santo has confirmed that Lucas Paquetá is back to the starting lineup for they play Brighton on Sunday, after serving a ban following a sending-off he received Liverpool.
“It is behind us,” Nuno remarked. “I am positive it will not be repeated because he personally admitted the error. We spoke internally. I am positive it is over and it will not be repeated.”
Nuno also understands the significant strain facing his team, currently 18th ahead of Saturday's matches. “We cannot avoid it,” he admitted. “It's the situation. We must confront it. We're fighting for our top-flight status. We can't hide it.”
Arteta Pleased with No 9 Stand-in Merino
The Spanish midfielder could continue leading the line for Arsenal centre-forward despite their regular strikers return from injury. Merino has been deployed as a makeshift number nine due to injuries to Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
Merino found the net for the opener against Brentford before assisting Bukayo Saka for their second goal during a 2-0 victory which preserved {their|
