Former US treasury secretary the Harvard professor is leaving the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a series of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became publicly available.

Summers remarked in a release that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have served, enthusiastic about the potential of the enterprise, and anticipate tracking their development".

Summers, who previously presided over the prestigious university, declared on recently that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his relationship with Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The freshly disclosed messages demonstrated that the official exchanged messages with the financier until the day before Epstein's 2019 arrest for accused human trafficking of young people.

In another announcement, the technology organization expressed it understood his determination to resign.

"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the insight he brought to the directors," OpenAI stated.

Legislative Background

This news comes after the entire Congress of the legislative branch voted on this week to approve a legislation that would mandate the federal prosecutors to make public its records on the case.

The legislation will subsequently head to the administration of the White House for approval. The President has said he expects to endorse the legislation, after reversing his stance on the subject following objections from his followers.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of Epstein-connected correspondence made public by the legislative panel days ago included multiple high-profile figures in the financier's past associates, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those figures.

The communications showed that the economist and the financier regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often trying to connect the official to notable world leaders.

After the emails were shared with the wider community, he said he assumed "total ownership for my misguided decision to maintain corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

He further stated that he wanted "to restore trust and fix connections with the people nearest to me".

Previous Positions

The economist held high-level positions under party leaders; functioning as Treasury chief under the former president, and as head of the White House economic team under the former leader.

He headed the university from five years and remains a academic there. When announcing his withdrawal from public commitments recently on Monday, he indicated he would continue his academic responsibilities.

Further Repercussions

Following Summers' declaration on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a progressive research organization in the capital where he was a researcher, announced that he was not connected with the institution.

Summers became part of the leadership of the technology firm, which develops the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to remove its chief executive Sam Altman.
