Her Royal Highness's Yearly Yuletide Service of Carols Pays Tribute to Community Volunteers
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly Christmas carol concert at the iconic London venue, with a congregation comprising dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have supported their local areas.
The sizable congregation will hear a blend of carols, music and readings from performers including award-winning actors.
Focusing on Compassion and Love
The theme of the service, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.
Attending the event are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose child passed away from a brain cancer, and who set up a charity, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a child with a terminal illness.
"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often discreetly and without words, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an profound impact to the lives of others," wrote Catherine in a message before the carol service.
A Gradual Return
The Princess of Wales is continuing her own gradual return to the public eye after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, last month delivering her initial major address in two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".
Musical Talent and Access
Attendees entering the Abbey will be entertained by young musicians backed by the Future Talent charity, set up with the help of the former royal to increase availability of musical tuition.
An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who is a trumpet player and is from Pembrokeshire, has been assisted by the organisation, with funding assisting with instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "awesome" to be performing at the evening's event.
"Music can be very expensive," the musician remarked. She is now a student at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to hone their artistic talents.
A Family Affair
Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who plays the euphonium, will be present at the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many notable figures," she said.
Among the guests will be individuals spanning multiple eras.
That will feature young Saphia Turner, nine, honouree of a youth community award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to generate funds for local food charities.
Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts
The Abbey has been adorned with custom-created holiday decorations, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett helping to make them.
Taking to the stage will be recording artist Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a nautical singing ensemble, Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the perfect culmination."
The Together at Christmas carol concert will be aired by ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
