The relatives of young people lost after a tragic fire at a venue in a Switzerland's ski resort are enduring an painful period of uncertainty for official news and appealing for any details about their loved ones online.

The blaze devastated the a popular bar in Cans-Montana, located in the mountains of south-west Switzerland, in the early hours of the first day of the year. Circulated video depict the roof structure igniting as bottles with fireworks are held aloft.

Officials have warned that it could take considerable time to identify the fatalities of the fire, which claimed the lives of 40 people and injured another over a hundred. Officials said on Friday that the majority of the those hurt have been accounted for, with work ongoing to locate the other six.

"A companion informed me they ran away after the fire broke out and that he had his mobile with him, but then at a specific moment he lost sight of him," she said, adding he had been wearing a distinctive piece of jewelry.
