Oxford Union Future Leader Ousted Following Conservative Activist Comments
The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after losing a vote of confidence that came after his controversial online comments about Charlie Kirk.
The vote against George Abaraonye reached the required super-majority to remove him from office, according to an announcement from the organization.
Contentious Posts
The controversy erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly posted messages on online platforms that seemed to welcome the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while addressing a university in the United States.
According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.
The student leader is also reported to have written in a messaging group with other members appearing to express approval of the event.
Election Results
The vote of confidence took place over the weekend, with results announced on this week.
Society announcements indicated that 1,228 ballots were cast in favor of removal, while 501 were opposed the motion.
The announcement confirmed that the future president was considered to have stepped down in following the society's regulations.
Procedural Disputes
Voting operations were informally suspended early on Monday after the election official was reportedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from multiple individuals.
In a statement, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the count had been halted because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His response categorically refuted that any representative appointed by George had engaged in threatening or obstructive conduct.
Ongoing Dispute
The president-elect maintained that extremely serious issues had been referred to the governing body and that he remained the elected leader.
His statement added that he was "proud and thankful to have the support of well in excess of a majority of university members" who voted to have a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Critics have said that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".
External Reactions
On recently, Kirk's former chief of staff read out an public message to the Oxford Union on a related program broadcast.
The message accused the union of becoming a place where "presidents of the union publicly celebrate the assassination of a political opponent".
The communication indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "directly reach out to every U.S. political figure who has ever graced the union's chamber and advise them against future participation".
The society had earlier condemned Mr Abaraonye's remarks after the activist's killing and stated that concerns submitted about him had been referred for official review.
The president-elect had been one of several students to debate with Kirk at the society in spring.
