Peace Deal Offers Comfort to the Palestinian territory, Yet Concerns Remain Over What Lies Ahead

On Thursday morning, people witnessed minimal celebration throughout the Palestinian enclave. Reports of the imminent ceasefire had spread rapidly over the battered land in the dark hours, with a few gunshots fired into the sky as a form of jubilation, yet with the arrival of dawn the sentiment shifted to tense anticipation.

“Everyone is still afraid,” stated a 26-year-old woman in al-Mawasi, the squalid, overcrowded coastal strip where numerous families are residing under temporary shelters and plastic shacks.

“We are waiting for a public statement along with concrete assurances regarding access points, allowing food deliveries, and stopping the killing, devastation and forced relocations.”

Nearby, a 64-year-old man named Abbas Hassouna explained that his household were “waiting for a formal proclamation and dependable pledges for opening the crossings, facilitating nourishment delivery, and ending the fatalities, destruction and exile”.

“Once these developments occur, then we can genuinely trust them. Yet at this moment, apprehension persists. Parties might renege at any moment or violate the accord as before and we will remain amid the continuous pattern devoid of progress just further agony,” Hassouna expressed, a native of Gaza’s north yet has experienced relocation on multiple occasions.

Conflicting Feelings Throughout Locals

A 47-year-old woman called Ola al-Nazli explained she heard regarding the peace deal from her neighbours within the al-Mawasi district. “I was uncertain regarding my reaction, if I should celebrate or sad. We have experienced this many times before, and each time we were disappointed again, so this time anxiety and prudence have reached new heights,” Nazli stated, who had to abandon her residence in Gaza City by the recent Israeli offensive in the city.

“All residents exist in temporary shelters that fail to safeguard from chilly conditions or during shelling. Those who had money or work were stripped of all assets. This explains why our relief is mixed with suffering and anxiety. My sole wish that we may reside securely, without explosive noises, not having to relocate, and that access points will reopen shortly,” Nazli added.

Relief Arrangements Ongoing

Aid agencies stated they were organizing to inundate Gaza with nourishment and necessary items. The comprehensive proposal provides for an increase in aid delivery. The leader of the global health agency, the health organization’s leader, explained his team was prepared to “scale up its work to address critical medical requirements of patients across Gaza, and assist recovery of the ruined healthcare network”.

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, applauded the arrangement as significant comfort, and mentioned it possessed adequate stored provisions beyond the territory to supply the devastated territory’s over two million people over the next quarter. Although additional assistance has reached Gaza in recent weeks, amounts remain highly deficient, aid personnel indicated.

Relief and Concern Within Evacuated Residents

A resident called Jihad al-Hilu received information of the ceasefire on a radio while sitting in his tent within al-Mawasi. “In that instant, I sensed a blend of joy and relief, similar to a spark of hope reentered my soul after a long wait. We anxiously awaited this occasion, for the blood to stop and for the slaughter that have destroyed numerous families to conclude,” Hilu in his thirties told the Guardian.

“Concurrently, prevails substantial anxiety residing inside us. We fear that this peace arrangement may prove transient and that conflict may restart like earlier instances.”

Furthermore present broad anxieties about what peace may bring to Gaza, where more than 90% of dwellings have been damaged or demolished, nearly every facility obliterated and where many people experience daily hunger. Over sixty-seven thousand Palestinians primarily non-combatants have lost their lives amid armed conflict initiated following the armed incursion during late 2023, which killed 1,200 similarly mainly ordinary people and 251 people abducted by armed groups.

“The main anxiety beyond other issues is the deficiency of protection. Hunger can be endured, but the absence of safety constitutes the true catastrophe. I am concerned that Gaza could turn into an area of disorder controlled by criminal groups and armed factions in place of legal systems.”

Current Situation

Witnesses said Israeli forces fired tank shells to deter residents returning to northern parts of Gaza early Thursday yet mentioned no sounds of fighting or air attacks.

Nadra Hamadeh, who lost her sister, her sister’s husband, two nieces and another relative lost their lives in hostilities, mentioned her aspiration to travel back from the coastal area to northern Gaza at the earliest opportunity to check on her home, which she assumes to be damaged though not completely ruined.

“There is deep sorrow for those who lost their families and children and homes … Concerning our case, we look forward to revisiting our dwelling that we had to leave behind. The sensation persists as if our souls had been separated from our physical forms during our departure,” Hamadeh in her fifties commented.

“We desire that hostilities cease,
