The English golfer Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Play-Off Battle Against Tommy Fleetwood

Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional nerve to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic play-off after a topsy-turvy last day of competition.

Rai nailed a crucial birdie from just over eight feet to clinch the victory, echoing his only previous Rolex Series success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off victory against the same opponent.

Final Round Drama

The champion started the last day with a one-shot lead over countryman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under closing round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.

Fleetwood moved one shot ahead with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the sixteenth, but his rival pulled level again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to win outright on the last hole.

Play-Off Decider

This led to a playoff at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13m) in winnings.

{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even more individual. To compete alongside him the last two days was really special,” stated the winner, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on your game and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the moment how it feels. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”

Other Performances

Rory McIlroy left himself just too much to make up, finishing a stroke behind in a tie for third with the Dane, after a stunning 10-under final round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.

Højgaard carded six birdie putts of his own, but his hopes of leading the leaderboard were dented by a bogey on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round 63 to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
