The Year 2026 Hailed as the Age of the Croaking Craze.
While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these amphibious creatures. Given that a collection of frogs is known as an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Frogs are anything but new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. However, their prevalence has noticeably increased in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a significant portion are bona fide titles centered on frogs.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To understand this phenomenon, I conducted a detailed review into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The results paint a clear picture: a marked rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's growing prominence in the public consciousness is somewhat apparent elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the explosion in gaming looks uniquely strong.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
In my opinion, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs offer inherent creative potential for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a highlight in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues enable a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.
A number of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the biggest year so far.
When these games find success—and historically, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we could very well be on the verge of a true frog gaming renaissance.
