Unusual Crimson Lightning Recorded in the Atmosphere
A group of photographers operating in New Zealand have successfully captured photographs of red lightning, among the most elusive atmospheric displays in the world, where bright red bursts appear in the heavens.
An Unforgettable Night of Discovery
The imaging specialists initially planned to photograph the galactic core over the distinctive clay formations in the lower part of the country on a night in October, and unexpectedly witnessed the extraordinary event.
Assuming they would be blessed to get good weather that night, but their expedition became “a truly memorable experience,” an individual involved stated.
“He was checking his images for a Milky Way panorama and found he had recorded scarlet atmospheric flashes,” he noted. “We just could not believe it – there was a whole bunch of excited exclamations and all sorts going on in the darkness.”
Understanding Red Sprites
The scarlet phenomena are bursts of electrical energy in the upper atmosphere, generated by thunderstorms. Unlike lightning that shoots towards the surface, the phenomena ascend towards the mesospheric region, creating structures that resemble pillars, root vegetables or even bell-shaped organisms. The first photograph of a red sprite was taken – by chance – in 1989, by a group at the a academic organization.
Brief and Ethereal Sightings
The phenomena last for such a short time – lasting just a millisecond – that they are seldom seen to the human sight, but one photographer had a lucky break. “I was coincidentally viewing directly at an occurrence when it took place – just a perfect coincidence looking at the correct area of the sky and I saw a short crimson illumination,” he said.
Seeing the occurrences was a dream for this individual, an award-winning night scape photographer. “It seems that you’re seeing something that is not real, it appears mystical … the color is a profound crimson that is there for a split second, so it’s really interesting to witness.”
Advanced and Creative Mastery
Photographing a red sprite needs a mastery of specialized camera skills, as well as an understanding of science and innovative thinking, the photographer stated. “This is a highly complex type of photography that’s extremely satisfying as well.”
Another photographer commented it was counted as the “most extraordinary nights” of his life. “I was able to observe the Milky Way illuminating above the distant edge while these enormous red tendrils of light danced above a storm hundreds of kilometres away,” he explained.
A Unique Photographic Achievement
As far as he knows, there are no further recordings showing crimson flashes and the night sky of the south in a single image.
“This was a singular occasion when you understand you are observing a phenomenon you’ll probably never see again.”
