Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the ability to challenge specific calls made by the official, echoing the practice currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
